Turmeric
Turmeric for export refers to high-quality turmeric roots that are cultivated, processed, and traded internationally. Turmeric, scientifically known as Curcuma longa, is a flowering plant native to South Asia and is widely used as a spice, coloring agent, and medicinal herb. Export-quality turmeric undergoes careful cultivation, harvesting, processing, and packaging to ensure its flavor, aroma, color, and overall quality are maintained during transportation and storage.
Processing: Once harvested, the turmeric rhizomes undergo several processing steps to prepare them for export. These steps include:
- Cleaning: The harvested rhizomes are cleaned to remove dirt, roots, and other impurities.
- Boiling: Some farmers prefer to boil the rhizomes before drying to prevent spoilage and enhance the color and aroma of the turmeric.
- Drying: The cleaned or boiled rhizomes are sliced or cut into smaller pieces and then dried. Traditionally, drying is done under the sun, but commercial operations may use specialized drying equipment. The rhizomes are spread out in thin layers and regularly turned to ensure uniform drying. Drying can take several days to a week until the rhizomes become hard and brittle.
- Grinding: Once dried, the turmeric rhizomes are ground into a fine powder using grinding mills or machinery. Grinding ensures the production of turmeric powder, which is the most common form of turmeric used in culinary and medicinal applications.

Product Description:
Quality Control: Quality control measures are implemented during the processing of turmeric to ensure its quality and adherence to international standards. Parameters such as color, aroma, moisture content, curcumin content (the main active compound in turmeric), and absence of contaminants are carefully monitored. Turmeric powder samples are often tested for these parameters to ensure consistent quality.
Packaging and Storage: Export-quality turmeric powder is packaged in moisture-resistant, airtight containers to maintain its freshness and prevent moisture absorption. Proper packaging helps retain the vibrant color, aroma, and quality of the turmeric powder during transportation and storage. Storage facilities should be cool, dry, and away from direct sunlight to preserve the quality of the turmeric powder.
